Current CO2 Projects
CGSS and its staff have been involved in a multitude of CO2 projects over the last decade both within Australia and internationally. Many of those projects are commercial in confidence to clients and others are public domain.
The projects which can be publically discussed include:
ZeroGen Project
This project was a world-first and was supported by the Queensland Government. It was seen as a very important project for the future of the Black Coal Industry given the consequences that current and future carbon taxes imposed around the world may have on this industry.
CGSS staff provided geotechnical advice to the ZeroGen Project. The technical expertise provided incorporated the fields of geology and geophysics and strategic advice.
Queensland Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation
CGSS staff were the principal authors for production of the Regional Assessment of 36 sedimentary basins in Queensland for the geological storage of carbon dioxide. Results were presented as an atlas and geographical information system (GIS).
Global Carbon Capture and Storage Institute (GCCSI)
The Global CCS Institute engaged ICF International and its partners: Aurecon; Bradshaw Geoscience Consultants (BGC); Energy Research Centre of Netherlands (ECN); Ian Murray & Company (IMC), Howard Herzog, and Bill Senior to develop an internationally recognised definition of Carbon Capture and Storage Ready (CCS Ready) and provide best practice guidelines for policymakers to implement CCS Ready policies and programs. This report presents the ICF International Team’s definition of CCS Ready and our recommended best practice guidelines for policymakers, as well as supporting and background information about CCS Ready issues. In the process of developing this report, ICF solicited worldwide peer input on this report through a series of international roundtable discussions. The final version of these Best Practice Guidelines laed to a workshop held by the Global CCS Institute and the Carbon Sequestration Leadership Forum in 2010.
European Commission
The European Commission has engaged ICF International and its partners: Bradshaw Geoscience Consultants (BGC) and Bill Senior to develop a Proposal for Support to the Implementation of the Enabling Legal Framework on Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage.
Victorian Department of Primary Industries
CGSS will assist 3D-GEO, a Melbourne company, who has been awarded the tender to create a geological ‘skeleton’ of the Gippsland Basin that can be fleshed out to become a sophisticated 3D model and used by companies to explore for valuable resources. The skeleton created by 3D-GEO will be used to build a 3D model of the region. The model will then be used to understand how carbon dioxide, water, oil and gas move through the porous rocks with time.
